Video Game Server Hosting

Ok, this is my first thread here. For the past couple weeks I have been storing up willpower to get my first personal video game server up and running. The idea was to host a Gmod DarkRP server for another forum I use. (we play games on friday nights) I have been preparing an old HP Envy laptop to be my host machine, it meets the minimum system requirements for hosting a Gmod server, which is:

For 16-32 players:
  • CPU: 4 cores @ 3.0GHz+
  • RAM: 4-6GB
  • Storage: 25GB SSD
  • Bandwidth: 1.5 Mbps per player
Although I am running an HDD in this thing, I hope it doesn't affect performance too much. (I am going to run this bare metal, my shit laptop cannot handle VMs)

I did have some trouble getting the laptop running however. Although I successfully managed to install Debian 13 onto it, shortly after installation it refused to power on.

Turns out the battery, a PX03XL, was bloated and fucked up. After removal the machine booted fine. It is now exclusively a plugged-in device. Now, today hopefully I will get the server running. If you wanna host your own server on your own hardware I did find some of these useful.

A basic tutorial for installing SteamCMD onto a windows machine and getting a basic server to run. This guy has multiple videos for setting up different gamemodes as well.

A tutorial for installing SteamCMD. (note: this needs a rewrite for linux, at least with the repository section.)

Also, post your server machines and what you run on them if you host. If I fucked anything up be sure to let me know. More updates as they come.
(Charlie i am sorry my post is shit and might not be /diy/ please don't hurt me)
