learning to make music

Me and my friends are going to make a really bad platformer.
We are all bad at the roles we assigned each other. We have until next month to practice.

I was assigned music and sound effects and had one condition, that the music sounds good. I know nothing about reading/writing music nor any music theory, I can create very basic melodies but that's about it.

Im going to be using lmms. I know placing notes never sounds natural so I'm looking for a midi keyboard to pick up.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’d advise STEALING!!!

For the harmony:
Maybe find a song that you like that has the right feeling you’re looking for, and then look up the chord progression and just use that, and maybe transpose it

For the melody:
You could try to just loop the chord progression once you find it and hum melodies to yourself until you hum something you like or that you think sounds right

If you have harmony and melody you can get pretty far, arranging is just all to taste after that,, perhaps you could share what you have as you go

I really recommend reading this book, since it's very complete, but it explains everything in extreme detail, so even an idiot can understand. Of course, you don't need to read the full thing, it's huge, but just the first chapter will already help you, I believe.
