Black & White Movies

Geezer

Get some old school cool with these slick flicks (the titles are links to the movies):

Cyrano de Bergerac
A love story of Shakespearean proportion.
A great, yet ugly man pines for the love of his life.
It's got fencing, it's got quips, great acting, and dames. What more could you ask for?
I love this movie because Cyrano is an archetypal warrior-poet who believes in striving, not just in battle but in art.

Carnival Of Souls
A proto-Lynchian nightmare.
This movie has some great scenes set in the the abandoned Saltair Pavilion in Utah.

What are your favorite black and white movies?

I've watch some black & white films of the early years, but all I can recall now are the universal monsters, which I own the DVD set of. I haven't watched since high school but definitely, Dracula with Bela Lugosi had that gothic atmosphere just right, and Creature of the Black Lagoon had a timeless design.
That, and of course Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd's works, I like Modern Times, and while I thought the Great Dictator was dragging on for its contents, it's nevertheless a great watch; Keaton's Go West and Sherlock Jr. were fun watches, and I especially enjoyed The General. Admittingly I've only watched Lloyd's Safety Last but that one was a classic for a reason.
Speaking of Bela Lugosi, I love campy stuffs, and The Phantom Creeps had one gimmick that I can't get away from -- THE ROBOT! These were "film serials" -- not exactly full feature films. If you know, you know.
Also a colorized version, too

I watched this particular film a long while ago and it's simplistic empathy always makes me incredibly emotional, I think I've seen it quite a good many times and I still recall getting feelsy and teary eyed at the ending. If you search the Goddess 1934 on Youtube you should find it, I tried linking it and assuming I didnt screw something up it just said the video was unavailable.

I love black and white cinema as a medium when it's done particularly well, but don't have a lot of examples of ones easily found on Youtube. There was this really slow paced atmospheric chinese film from 1968 called The Arch I found on there, but I assume it got taken down. Besides, the film is really slow paced and sorta intentionally dull so I'm not sure if it'd be a big hit with anyone here!

Is this the movie?

Is this the movie?

it is! I was so focused on everyone posting Youtube that I didn't consider looking elsewhere. Thought it didn't fit the theme or something. Hopefully you get something out of it if you end up trying it out! I've seen a lot of black and white movies during my life, honestly wasn't sure what would be a good fit, but I'll just post some random ones I enjoy. I'm going to assume modern black and white is out.

My dear mom always wanted me to get into John Wayne films because she grew up on them but honestly this might be the only one that's done a whole lot for me. Really entertaining ensemble film that has some stellar shots and creative editing. Surprisngly really funny at times too! Highly recommend.

Probably one of my absolute favorite visual films ever, and I'm definitely not alone in that assessment! A noir staple really, and a film that I think utilizes the black and white format to perfection. The ending section of this leaves me breathless everytime I watch it.

My absolute favorite film without question. Might be a bit on the nose about no being modern black and white, and its definitely on the slower arthouse side. This won't be for everyone, but it's the most life affirming quietly beautiful psychological portrait I've ever watched. I still think about the hike I took with my family after I watched this and how at peace I was with everything.

Another arthouse film, this time a Japanese one and one I actually own. Incredibly depressing, but very empathetic. Mizoguchi is legit a master, figured I'd pay respects.
This one's also an infamously dark one as it's about an entire city trying to track down and deal with a child murderer, so be wary of that. Peter Lorre is absolutely fantastic in this role, and the film manages to balance asking incredibly tough questions while being an incredibly entertaining noir/thriller. Definitely a thought provoking movie, as pretentious as that might initially come across.

True patrician's choice. Goofy over the top halloween classic. Not much else to say. The dude has killer sunglasses.

Hopefully you guys find something here you can get behind. Take it easy out there.

Ok so that's M, I thought it was centizen kane at first.
I also totally forgot that Night of the Living Dead was monochrome when it came out:
